PRESS RELEASE, JUNE 2009- Source Beaumont Enterprise Article- "Exposing Summer Skin Care Slackers". Summer is peak skin display season, when sleeveless blouses, short shorts, barely-there swimwear and sandals give way to ashy elbows, pebbled knees and cracked heels with no place to hide. Winter clothes can cover a lot of neglect, but summer exposes skin-care slackers.
Here's our head to toe summer skin care primer, based on tips from skin care experts, including Kristi McConathy (nails by Kristi), Sunny West (Glow Specialty Skin Care Salon) and Rhianna Artz (Medesthetic Center for Cosmetic Enhancement on Calder).
First, honor your ancestry. Skin care routines should take ethnicity into account; different skin types, different products. Sunscreen, use it faithfully and lavishly. Most people don't know how much to use, said Sunny. At least a shot glass full for normal exposed skin is good; in summer, that would increase proportionately for the amount of skin uncovered. Hydrate, drink lots of water. It not only hydrates the skin, but helps flush toxins. Eat right. What goes in us shows up in what covers us. Take in lots of fruits and vegetables (anitoxidants), heart (and skin) healthy oils and omega3 fatty acids. Be more active, exercise is great for the skin. Why? If your energy expenditure is increased, so is your circulation, which carries oxygen and nutrients to your skin. And sweating is your friend; it cleans out pores, however if you do not wash thouroughly after it could have the opposite effect and cause you to breakout. Exfoliate. Exfoliating exposes the newer, smooth skin beneath. It also helps keep skin clear by unclogging pores. Use a good exfoliate once a week or cleanse with a loofah sponge, be sure not to use the loofah on your face just on your body. Never forget to put a good moisturizer on afterwards. Get lots of sleep. Your skin looks refreshed and rested- that's why. All exfoliates are not equal, said Rhianna Artz at the Medesthetic Center. She recommends avoiding any that use crystals or beads on the face, which can damage delicate skin by breaking down tissue. Instead, look for products with Alpha Hydroxy Glycolic Acids in them. After exfoliating, moisturize with a product that has Hyaluronic Acid, which attracts water molecules and can help fill in lines over time. And always, always, wear sunscreen (all over the body, she said). Otherwise you are undoing all the good you did by exfoliating, which exposes fresh skin easily damaged by the sun. Aslo, use a lip balm with SPF of at least 15, but the higher the better.
